I’ll have the pleasure of interviewing the professions team lead developer (Matt Goss) for Legion‬ at BlizzCon‬. Please leave a question you’d like asked and I’ll pick a few for the interview!

Here are somethings we know about professions so far,

  • Professions will continue to only require skill level 1 in Legion. No info yet on skill level perks since no more cooldown materials
  • Crafted profession gear will still be limited to maximum of three equipped in Legion
  • There will little to no cooldown gated profession materials for crafting in Legion
  • We may be getting back prospecting back in Legion, not 100% but it’s being discussed
  • New material called “Obliterium” obtained from destroying crafted items at the forge.  These will be used to upgrade crafted items in Legion
  • Professions are a guided experience in Legion. Each one will have quests tied in and getting dungeons drops for materials as well
  • More dungeon drops for crafting
  • There will be no more stage upgrade tokens in Legion for crafted gear.

Patch 6.2 Preparation / Recap – Overview of Profession Changes and Additions.

We have yet to get an official release date for patch 6.2, but my speculation is June 23rd (24th for EU) due to end of the PvP season being announced 1 week ago on June 9th.  Players have less than two weeks now to prepare. I going to recap on profession changes and additions to the game coming with patch 6.2.

Patch 6.2 will introduce a new crafting reagent,  Felblight. (This is the new  Savage Blood) Felblight can only be obtained from gathering in Tanaan Jungle (Yes, gathering professions will have a purpose again.) Jewelcrafters will finally be able to once again craft Epic Gems! (We haven’t had Epic Gems since Cataclysm) Stage 5 and 6 crafted gear upgrades are added to the game that will give players an additional +30 item levels. Wait for it…. MASS MILLING is coming to the game.. players will be able to mill 20 herbs at time instead of 5.

 Felblight will be used for Stage 5 and 6 crafted upgrades, Epic Gems and a new Glyph being added,  Technique: Glyph of Ascendance.

How are  Felblight obtained you might ask?

As stated before, they are only obtained from within Tanaan Jungle zone. Also, to access Tanaan Jungle characters need to be level 100 with a level 3 Garrison and unlocked their Shipyard.

Withered Herb (Herb), Felmouth Frenzy School (Fishing), Beasts (Skinning) and Ore Nodes (Mining) can contain / give a chance at  Felblight. If you do not have a character with a gathering profession then you will have to resort to your local auction house to purchase them.  Felblight will not be obtainable from your Garrison  Primal Spirit trader like  Savage Blood‘s can currently be traded for.

Stage 1-4 Upgrades Changes

Stage 3 and 4 upgrades have been removed! Players can use Stage 2 upgrades all the way to stage 4. This means that it will be cheaper to go from Stage 1 to Stage 4. Existing “Greater” and “Powerful” items transform into Unstable items; clicking on them creates a Stage 2 item and a materials refund for the extra reagents used to craft the more Stage 3 and 4 upgrades.

Stage 5 and 6 for crafted gear is being added into the game and will take 30x  Felblight / 60x  Felblight + 175 / 350 of the professions specific cooldown bind on pickup materials.

Stage 6 (Armor = ilvl 715| Weapons = ilvl 705)

There is one new Glyph being added into the game,  Technique: Glyph of Ascendance. Currently, it’s speculated to only drop from Tanaan Jungle and is Bind on Pickup. If your scribe character isn’t level 100 yet, you might want to consider leveling it now! The glyph will require 1x  Light Parchment, 3x  Warbinder’s Ink and 1x  Felblight. I expect these to go for a hefty amount of gold for the first few weeks of patch 6.2.


Patch 6.2 adds Epic Gems into the game. In order to access the quests to unlock these cuts, you will need to be level 100 and have the ability to access Tanaan Jungle. (Level 100 + Level 3 Garrison + Shipyard)

Quest Chain
Gems of the Apexis ->  Mastery Of Taladite ->  Ruined Construct (Requires 1000x  Apexis Crystal) = Teaches  Immaculate Versatility Taladite cut.

To learn the other gems cuts, players will need to find more Gemcutter Modules and return them to the Apexis Gemcutter. Players must use the Apexis Gemcutter in Tanaan Jungle to cut Epic gems, you cannot do it on your own. Below is info on how to obtain the other epic gem cuts; there is a small chance players will learn one of the new recipes when Apexis Gemcutter crafts a gem for them.

Daily Cooldown for BoP crafting items have been doubled. Example, level 1 Jewelcrafting pre 6.2 would get 4x  Taladite Crystal. After patch 6.2 a level 1 Jewelcrafter will get 8x  Taladite Crystal. Level 700 Jewelcrafters go from 10x  Taladite Crystal -> 20x  Taladite Crystal.

Rare-quality crafted gear now gives 10 skill points instead of 5.

In World of Warcraft Patch 6.2, you’ll oversee your Garrison’s first new major construction project—and take command of your forces in a whole new theater of war. In order to push back against the twisted remnants of the Iron Horde, you’ll need to expand your operations to the shore and set your sights on the seas between you and the mysterious Tanaan Jungle. To do that, you’ll need a Shipyard.

Alliance Shipyard

The Shipyard is a new building available to all Garrison commanders who have reached level 100 and improved their Garrison to level 3—and after you travel to the Iron Docks and discover just how dire the naval situation is, you’ll want to make your Shipyard a top priority. As soon as you return to your Garrison, you’ll be able to raise a level 1 Shipyard and begin construction on your first ocean vessel immediately.

Your Fledgling Fleet

In war, you need soldiers to fight on the front lines—with that in mind, your first ship will be the mighty Troop Transport, a vessel designed to help you tackle a variety of seafaring threats. This stalwart ship will help you initiate combat, and will serve as the backbone of your fleet as you’re getting your feet wet.

Ships are managed much like Garrison Followers. You’ll send your ships on naval missions, and each naval mission will present a new set of challenges for you to counter with your ships’ abilities. Some of the new abilities include Salty Crew (improves success chance by 10%), Unsinkable (shields the ship from a fatal shot), and Trained Shark Tank—because navigating through mine-studded waters is no problem when you have trained sharks on your side.

And guns. The sharks have guns.

Setting a Course

Just as your Followers need Garrison Resources to operate, your ships will require Oil. Collect enough Oil to send your ships on many naval missions, and you’ll unlock the level 2 and level 3 Shipyard, allowing you to maintain more ships and take on more naval missions.

There’s oil on Draenor! And as fate would have it, it’s mainly to be found in Tanaan, where the enemy has been collecting the precious substance for a while now. They’ll have to be relieved of it in some way or another . . . and that’s where you come in. Your ships need oil. Your entire war effort now depends on it.

Naval warfare to take place precisely right there!

Your ships also come with equipment, and how you use it will play a key role in your success on the high seas. For example, a ship with a Gyroscopic Internal Stabilizer can deal with Chaotic Whirlpools by staying upright and stable. A ship with a Food Storage Bay has additional space for stashing extra supplies, and is therefore better at taking on longer naval missions.

Your ships can be manned by a specific crew, and the composition of the crew helps determine your results and rewards. For example, a goblin crew increases the gold gained from the mission; a night elf crew reduces mission time; and a human crew increases your success chance.

A tauren crew is sturdy—and rewards a 50% experience bonus.

The high seas are filled with threats, and they won’t be easy to deal with. Take too much of a risk on a naval mission, and you could lose your vessels and all of the time and resources they represent. You’ll want to pay close attention to which ships counter which threats. For example:

  • Submarines move silently underwater, sneaking up on unsuspecting ships.
  • Destroyers counter Submarines with Depth Charges.
  • Battleships fire long-range artillery to sink enemies such as Destroyers.
  • Carriers deploy bombers to attack Battleships from the air.

In World of Warcraft Patch 6.2, we’re making some changes to our Raid itemization with the goal of improving the Personal Loot experience, creating more interesting distinctions among items, and providing rewards that more closely reflect the challenge players face to earn them.

Personal Loot Improvements

The Personal Loot system offers several advantages to certain group types, but there are still several areas where we think we can make improvements. Our goals with Personal Loot going forward are threefold:

  • Make Personal Loot more consistent and rewarding.
  • Bring Personal Loot up to be competitive with Group Loot, so players who prefer Personal Loot receive rewards comparable to those you get from groups using Master Loot or Need/Greed.
  • Celebrate rewarding Personal Loot within the group in a way that captures the excitement of receiving rewards in Group Loot.

First, rather than treating loot chances independently for each player—sometimes yielding only one or even zero items for a group—we’ll use a system similar to Group Loot to determine how many items a boss will award based on eligible group size. As a result, groups will receive a much more predictable number of drops when they defeat a boss. In addition, set items will reliably drop in Personal Loot, just like they do in Group Loot today. The end result is that groups using Personal Loot will acquire their 2- and 4-piece set bonuses at around the same time as groups using Group Loot acquire theirs.

We’re also increasing the overall rate of reward for Personal Loot, giving players more items overall to offset the fact that Personal Loot rewards can’t be distributed among group members. We know that finding that one awesome specific trinket to round out your gear set can be difficult with Personal Loot, and this should help increase your odds.

Finally, the most visible change is the new Personal Loot UI. Part of the fun of raiding is progressing and improving as a group, not just as an individual. The previous Personal Loot system celebrated your own rewards, but would bury what your groupmates received in the chat log. However, the moment when your friend finally wins that long sought-after sword can be just as important to you as that moment you won your boots—and we wanted the game to help you celebrate it, too. Now when you loot an item, everyone in your group will see what you won!

These Personal Loot improvements aren’t limited to Hellfire Citadel—we’re updating all of our Draenor dungeons, including Mythic dungeons, to use the same system.

Secondary Stats

In the early days of World of Warcraft, Raid bosses didn’t have that many items to drop—there were only 150 items in all of Molten Core, and more than half of those were set items. This small amount of total gear in a Raid meant there might only have been one or two items per slot in an entire tier that were appropriate for your class—and if you were a Hunter or a Shaman in a place like Molten Core, that meant your only option for a belt in the entire Raid zone was your class set piece. On top of that, if an item wasn’t class restricted, it was shared between many other specializations with wildly different ideas of which stats were good or bad. When very few items were available to fill any given slot, the desire to make sure they were useful for many specs led us to keep from straying too far from a 50/50 split on secondary stats.

…we’ve decided to shake things up with how secondary stats appear on Raid loot in this patch.

As the game has evolved, we’ve increased the number of items that bosses drop per kill, as well as the variety of items they drop. We’ve made secondary stats more competitive with one another, and we’ve reduced the frequency of oddball items that were only useful to a few classes. This made more items useful to more people, but eroded the distinction and sense of identity that items held in the past. Too rare became the situation where you knew for sure that this drop was your awesome piece of equipment, and that feeling of finding a truly special item came less often than we would have liked.

To help bolster that sense of excitement, we’ve decided to shake things up when it comes to how secondary stats appear on Raid loot in this patch. Inside Hellfire Citadel, you’ll see a wider range of high and low secondary stat values on items than you have in a long time. Alongside some tuning adjustments that should ensure your attuned stats are the right choice, this change should also make it easier for you to identify which items are good for you in a more interesting way than just “equip the highest Item Level.” Our goal is to help make Hellfire Citadel Raid items more distinct and meaningful to you, and we hope you’ll let us know how things feel once you start collecting your new gear.

Item Level Ramp

As this expansion has progressed, it’s become increasingly apparent that there is a mismatch between challenge and reward for guilds that delve deep into large Raid zones. When the Item Level for rewards across a given difficulty of a zone is flat, a caster staff from Heroic Imperator Mar’gok is largely equal in power to one from Heroic Tectus, despite Mar’gok being the far more challenging boss. We often see and hear about guilds killing a late-zone boss like Blast Furnace for the first time, only to disenchant most of the drops because everyone already has loot from earlier bosses in those slots. On top of that, many guilds move on to higher difficulties before they fully complete a difficulty, because Heroic Darmac loot is stronger than Normal Blackhand loot—and you can get it for much less effort.

To address this, we are structuring Hellfire Citadel so that the Item Level of the loot awarded by bosses increases as players proceed deeper into the zone, culminating in Archimonde—providing both the ultimate challenge and the ultimate reward.

We’re doing this for a few reasons. First, it feels good to get higher-level items as you progress through a zone. One of the more prominent pieces of feedback we got about Blackrock Foundry was that it felt unrewarding for challenging bosses like Iron Maidens to drop loot that was just as good as—or possibly worse than—Gruul’s.

This also breaks up where your best items are in a good way. The power of the items that you can get in a particular slot will differ based on how far through the zone you are. The best boots for you will likely be different if you are on Normal Gorefiend than they would be if you’re on Heroic Mannoroth, which would be different than if you’re on Mythic Iron Reaver, and so on.

We can’t overstate how much we appreciate your feedback on topics like this, especially when you’ve taken the time to join us on the Patch 6.2 PTR and experienced the changes for yourself. As development continues on Patch 6.2, we’re excited to share some additional information on two new upcoming features—Bonus Events and the new Adventure Guide.

Bonus Events

The Bonus Events system consists of a rotating schedule of seven different activities, currently scheduled to run from Friday through Monday of each week. Each Bonus Event grants a passive bonus to a particular game activity and offers a once-per-event quest with a noteworthy reward for accomplishing a related goal. The in-game calendar (located in the upper right-hand corner of the mini-map) can serve as your one-stop reference for the event schedule. The Adventure Guide—discussed in detail below—will also offer a direct link to active Bonus Events, allowing you to easily accept any associated quests.

Timewalking—The Burning Crusade and Wrath of the Lich King

The schedule will feature two different Timewalking Bonus Events, each themed around an expansion: The Burning Crusade or Wrath of the Lich King. Your character’s level and gear scales down to the dungeon at Heroic difficulty, but the loot you receive is scaled back up, making it a great way to gear up characters as well as receive cool items for transmogrification. Completing three Timewalking dungeons as a part of a quest during the event awards a Seal for an extra bonus roll, which isn’t counted toward the weekly cap of three seals. Draenor Dungeons

While this Bonus Event is active, defeating enemies in any Draenor dungeon will award reputation with an appropriate faction. Completing two Mythic-difficulty Warlords dungeons as a part of a quest during the event awards a Heroic Hellfire Citadel Raid cache.


During the Battlegrounds Bonus Event, you’ll earn triple Honor points from random Battlegrounds. Completing the event quest by winning a few random Battlegrounds awards 500 Conquest Points, which do not count toward the weekly Conquest cap.

Arena Skirmishes

You’ll earn triple Honor points from random Arena Skirmish matches during this event. A quest to win several random Arena Skirmish matches will award 500 Conquest Points, which do not count toward the weekly Conquest cap.


If you’re trying to stock up on Apexis Crystals, you’ll be able to gain triple the amount from eligible creatures during this Bonus Event. Completing three area assault objectives during the event awards a sizable amount of Oil to fuel new Naval Missions as a part of your Shipyard. (More information on this new resource will be covered in a future Shipyards and Naval Missions preview.)

Pet Battles

During Pet Battle Bonus Events, you’ll be able to take your pets out for a little exercise and earn triple pet experience from battles. Winning five PvP Pet Battles as a part of a quest during the event awards the player with an Ultimate Battle-Training Stone that instantly levels a pet to 25.



Adventure Guide

Patch 6.2 also introduces the Adventure Guide, which acts as a landing page of sorts for our other in-game Journals, and makes it easier than ever to find content and activities that are relevant to your character.

The Adventure Guide suggests content based on a number of factors, such as character level, item level, quest progress, achievements, and more. The Guide is fully interactive, allowing players to accept relevant quests or search for a group via Group Finder with a single click.
